What Caused a Huge Increase in Excess Deaths in the US

What Caused a Huge Increase in Excess Deaths in the US

July 11, 2022 Elizabeth Hanson M. Ed.

Excess deaths are deaths that are above the number of expected deaths in a given year. For example, if insurance companies or government agencies expected 20,000 twenty year olds to die in 2021 and 22,000 ended up dying, that would mean 2,000 excess deaths. Life insurance companies have to have an idea of how many people are going to die in a given year in order to make a profit.

Meet the 25-44 year old age group

Since the start of the Covid era in 2020, there have been a lot of excess deaths among working age people age 18-64. Shockingly, from 2020 to 2021, there was a 163% increase in the amount of money paid out in death benefits by the insurance company Lincoln National. The massive increase in life insurance payouts occurred in deaths that were mostly NOT related to the pandemic. Here is part of a press release announcing their first-quarter 2022 losses:

...in the press release accompanying the first-quarter 2022 results, Lincoln National attributes the $41 million operating loss to “non-pandemic-related morbidity” and “unusual claims adjustments.”

01

https://crossroadsreport.substack.com/p/breaking-fifth-largest-life-insurance?s=r

Here are the amounts of money paid out in death benefits by the Lincoln National life insurance company from 2019-2021:

2019: $500,888,808

2020: $547,940,260

2021: $1,445,350,949

It is a reasonable assumption that the Covid virus was responsible for the 9.4% increase in death benefit payouts from 2019 to 2020. However, what accounts for the dramatic 163% increase in life insurance payouts from 2020 to 2021?

Here is another insurance company, OneAmerica, taking notice of the excess deaths:

OneAmerica Insurance CEO: Deaths Increase 40% Among People Ages 18-64

“We are seeing, right now, the highest death rates we have seen in the history of this business – not just at OneAmerica,”... The data is consistent across every player in that business.”

“Just to give you an idea of how bad that is… a one-in-200-year catastrophe would be 10% increase over pre-pandemic. So 40% is just unheard of…”

https://headlineusa.com/oneamerica-insurance-ceo-deaths-increase-40-among-people-ages-18-64/

The 163% jump in life insurance payouts at Lincoln National didn’t make sense to me and neither did the 40% increase at OneAmerica. I wanted to know what was accounting for these excess deaths, which led me to do research and to write this article.

Highly credentialed voices have questions and concerns

John Campbell, PhD in nursing education from the UK, is wondering about excess deaths too. The title of his video is “Non Covid excess deaths”

02

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f45S6vmQgA

Likewise, Dr Vinay Prasad wonders if the current problems we are facing (decreases in mental health, inflation, supply chain issues, etc) have been caused more by our response to the Covid virus than to the virus itself.

It should not be forgotten however that our response was extreme and driven by a handful of influential people.”

One thing I found from looking into excess deaths is that there was a huge increase in deaths NOT caused by the Covid virus in people age 25-44 in both 2020 and 2021.

This article is organized as follows:

1- Deaths involving Covid nationwide broken down by age

2- Vaccination: Levels of vaccination by age, vaccine breakthrough cases and deaths, vaccine immunity vs immunity after infection

3- Sources for figuring out excess deaths and how many are Covid related, specific info about deaths in people age 25-44

4- Conclusion: a list of independent sources of information about Covid, scientists, doctors, virologists and researchers who have been dismissed by the US government and mainstream media.

1- Deaths involving Covid nationwide broken down by age

This is the current number of deaths involving Covid 2020-2022 in the US from the CDC website (retrieved on July 10th 2022):

05

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm#SexAndAge

Note that the CDC doesn’t say Covid deaths; instead, they say Deaths involving Covid-19.

As you know, Covid-19 is a virus that is a risk to people based on their age, underlying health condition and their overall immune system. The older a person is and the more comorbidities he or she has, like obesity, diabetes, heart or lung disease, the more likely they are to have a death involving Covid. An 80 year old with COPD, diabetes and heart disease is at a much greater risk of a death involving Covid than a teenage athlete or a healthy 60 year old.

Looking at the total number of Covid related deaths in the US (1,010,132) we can determine what % of Covid related deaths occur in each age group.

06

As you can see, the vast majority of deaths involving Covid occur in people over the age of 50. People between 0 and 49 years old comprise 6.8% of all Covid related deaths. Over half of all Covid related deaths occur in people over the age of 75. Our age group 25-44 accounts for approximately 3% of all Covid-related deaths.

2- Vaccination: Levels of vaccination by age, vaccine breakthrough cases and deaths

It is understandable that when the US was hit with the Covid virus in 2020, the government and public health wanted to develop a vaccine and/or a treatment protocol to prevent death. In their attempts to control an airborne virus, they instituted mask mandates as well as small business and school closures. People were encouraged to stay home and to work from home. A new class of workers emerged- “essential workers”.

When the vaccines came out in early 2021, we were strongly encouraged to get vaccinated, and many places of employment mandated that their workers be vaccinated. Colleges and universities mandated that students be vaccinated… with emergency use vaccines that have known side effects.

Many doctors, virologists, scientists and academics disagreed with the governments’ (state and federal) response to the Covid virus. Some pointed out that mass vaccination of a population in the middle of a pandemic is a bad idea.

In August 2021 Geert Vanden Bossche, PhD in Virology, wrote: “Mass vaccination in the middle of a pandemic is prone to promoting selection and adaptation of immune escape variants that are featured by increasing infectiousness and resistance to spike protein (S)-directed antibodies (Abs), thereby diminishing protection in vaccinees and threatening the unvaccinated.”

https://www.voiceforscienceandsolidarity.org/scientific-blog/c-19-pandemia-quo-vadis-homo-sapiens

Nearly a year ago, Dr Vanden Bossche warned that the mass vaccination campaign would result in an increasing number of Covid variants which would infect both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. What do we see today?

The fact that highly credentialed people, like virologist Dr. Geert Vanden Bossche, have been prevented from participating in the formulation of the Covid response, or allowed to question the wisdom of massively vaccinating the population with an experimental vaccine has shocked me. I’m 61 years old and had never seen such an assault on free speech or free thought in the US before.

USA Facts reports the % of people in the US fully vaccinated by age (retrieved on July 4 2022):

07

https://usafacts.org/visualizations/covid-vaccine-tracker-states/

By fully vaccinated USAfacts means people have taken two doses of Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. USAfacts also includes the percentage of Americans who have received booster shots in their image of vaccine progress:

08

I bet you remember when we were told:

Vaccinated people do not carry the virus, don’t get sick” (Dr. Rochelle Walensky, March 29th, 2021);

When people are vaccinated, they can feel safe that they are not going to get infected” (Dr. Anthony Fauci, May 17th, 2021).”

Breakthrough Infections
I am from Seattle, Washington. One piece of evidence showing that the Covid vaccines aren’t working as we were promised and that Dr Geert Vanden Bossche was correct in his warning, comes from the WA state Dept of Health, which regularly reports Covid breakthrough infections. In WA state, which has a population of 7.7 million people, and a total vaccination rate of roughly 75%, between January 17, 2021-June 25, 2022, a total of 540,151 people tested positive for Covid. Of that group, 0.5% died (2,450 deaths).

09 This was a 2.5% rise in cases from two weeks previously.

https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2022-02/420-339-VaccineBreakthroughReport.pdf?uid=62bf7b626c122

According to the CDC, here are the numbers of Covid-related deaths which have occurred in WA state through June 2022:

11

We can’t say Covid vaccines prevent infection and death when the number of breakthrough deaths (2,450) from Jan 2021-June 2022 are nearly as many as the number of Covid related deaths we’ve seen in WA state (2,587) recorded so far in 2022!

Today is July 11th 2022 and I am seeing and hearing about lots of fully vaccinated people with Covid infections, many people on their 2nd or 3rd infection.

A German Covid researcher looked to see if the level of vaccination relates to the number of Covid infections in Germany:

Yes yes, there are systematic demographic differences between East and West Germans, and there are probably some differences in testing rates, but above all, there is an important difference in vaccine uptake. In this map of triple vaccination rates across my country, the old DDR borders (the border between East and West Germany) are also evident.”

12

https://www.eugyppius.com/p/omicron-ba5-prefers-hypervaccinated

As you can see in the maps above, there are more Covid cases in the highly vaccinated areas in Germany.

Recently Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates both admitted that the vaccines aren’t working as hoped and the mainstream media admits that the vaccines aren’t working as promised:

Immunity against Covid
Recovering from a Covid infection results in some level of protection against other Covid infections. A person’s immune system learns how to recognize the Covid virus and mounts a defense. According to numerous studies, this protection is as robust or more robust than protection that comes from a Covid vaccine. In the video below, Dr. John Campbell goes through recent studies on building immunity against the Covid virus:

After experiencing the Covid era and doing a lot of reading, I think we should have had a different response to the Covid virus. Let’s now leave the question of Covid vaccination turn to excess deaths in the 25-44 year old age group

3- Sources for figuring out excess deaths and how many are Covid related, specific info about deaths in people age 25-44

The two websites I use to find the number of excess deaths per year and the Covid-related deaths per year are:

1- The CDC -The CDC has reported deaths involving Covid through June 2022. (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm#SexAndAge)

2- US Mortality: https://www.usmortality.com

US Mortality provides information on how many deaths had been predicted and the actual number of deaths that were reported. If you subtract the number of deaths expected from the number of deaths that were reported, you get the number of excess deaths. That information is located under the charts here:

https://www.usmortality.com/excess-absolute

US Mortality has death data up through June 2022, - 6 months of 2022. The brilliant researchers at the US Mortality website study mortality (death) because:

Mortality is a basic indicator of health….With the emergence of new diseases or threats of epidemics (e.g. pandemic influenza, SARS), decision makers will need such data to estimate the severity of the problem and inform any initiatives to be put in place as part of an effective public health response... Mortality monitoring should be ongoing to detect when and where excess mortality occurs.”

I wouldn’t have been able to write this article without US Mortality. I am grateful for their work. You can find out more about US Mortality here: https://www.usmortality.com/about

Note: A problem arose when capturing the exact numbers for the 25-44 year olds because US Mortality breaks down the ages differently from the CDC and this required extrapolation.

15

For example, to capture the Covid related deaths in the 25-44 year age group, I had to look at the CDC’s 18-29 year old category to get 5 years of data (age 25-29). To estimate the number of deaths for 25-29 year olds, I multiplied the total number of Covid related deaths in the 18-29 age group by 0.42. (18-24 is 7 years. 25-29 is 5 years. 5 / 12 = 0.42) For the 40-49 year age group I divided the number of deaths by 2. The numbers aren’t exact but still paint a startling picture.

Excess Deaths in the US – Age 25-44 – The learning and earning years

16

The 25-44 year old age group had the highest increase of excess than any other age group in the US. And in 2020 and 2021 the vast majority of these deaths are not related to Covid.

First, let’s look at their excess mortality chart:

17

-The red dash line indicates a substantial increase in deaths.

-The solid blue line shows the actual number of deaths.

-The green band shows the expected death range.

There were a lot of excess deaths in the 25-44 year old age group from early April 2020 to March 2022. Recall that about 70% of this group is fully vaccinated and 25-44 year olds account for roughly 3% of all Covid deaths.

Examining the death trend line as a whole from 2020-2022, (reading left to right) you can see a massive number of excess deaths.

Did the young adults die from the Covid virus itself, the Covid mandates including business shut-downs and school closures (high stress events leading to deaths of despair), putting off medical care, the Covid vaccine itself? Can you think of any other possible reasons for the huge increase in deaths? We don’t expect 25-44 year olds to die. We have seen a dramatic drop in deaths since the start of 2022 and the number of deaths has been below the expected number of deaths since April.

Let’s look at the chart again:

18

Notice how there were as many or more deaths in January 2022 (70% vaccinated) than in January 2021 when very few people in this age group were vaccinated. (Recall how many of these people did not want to be vaccinated but were mandated to for work and school.) Also, note how there was a huge increase in deaths that started in July 2021 leading to a sustained plateau in the fall of 2021.

Let’s look at the number of expected deaths (from all causes) vs the number of reported deaths. Subtracting the two numbers gives us the excess number of deaths. We get this information from US Mortality.

19

This chart shows the death trend through mid-June 2022 while the previous chart seems to stop in June. The good news is that the death trend is going down.

https://www.usmortality.com/excess-absolute

(retrieved on July 10, 2022)

Examining the table, notice the huge increases in excess deaths in 2020 (37,333) and 2021 (66,491). Notice how the number of deaths reported in 2022 so far (Jan-June) are on track to being far less than the number of deaths reported in both 2020 and 2021.

Now let’s figure out how many of the excess deaths involved Covid in the 25-44 year old age group. To do that, we need the CDC Covid-related death numbers:

20

Here is a screen shot from the CDC website: The total number of Deaths involving Covid in the age group 18-49. Again, we are looking at the 25-44 year olds, so extrapolation is required. (Retrieved on July 10, 2022):

21

Age 25-44

22

Why were there so many non-Covid related deaths in 2020 and 2021, way more compared to deaths involving Covid? Also, looking at 2022, why do the Covid related deaths (5,630) exceed the number of excess deaths (3,309)? Also, note at this rate, the number of Deaths involving Covid in 2022 is set to surpass the number of Deaths involving Covid in 2020.

Let’s see what those numbers look like as percentages.

23

Again, we have to wonder about the cause of the excess deaths In 2020 and 2021. Did the Covid lockdowns and business closures lead to a substantial number of deaths of despair? Did the Covid virus or the Covid vaccine weaken some people’s immune system to the point that when they got sick, they died from things other than Covid, like cancer or organ failure? Were people afraid to go to the doctor or were their important appointments canceled in 2020 and 2021 thus leading to death? Could it have been the Covid vaccine itself?

Causes of death in young adults

Media has reported on Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

24

A google search brings up many articles like these:

25

I had never heard of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome before Covid vaccination, had you? Many voices in independent media like Mark Crispin Miller, Professor of propaganda studies at NYU, report on Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. In the following article he shows how mainstream media attempt to explain away excess deaths by things like birth control, marijuana and being around too much noise.

26

https://markcrispinmiller.substack.com/p/theyre-trying-to-distract-us-from

Every week on his Substack page, Professor Miller posts the stories of people, who have been dying from Adult Sudden Death Syndrome.

I don’t know exactly why so many people died in 2020 and 2021 of non-Covid causes.

What prevents people from looking at Covid outside of the mainstream perspective?

There are a great many people who are unwilling to look at information outside of the news bubble they have constructed: their favorite politicians, their accustomed newspapers, doctors and public health officials, journalists who they like because of their personality.

Even allegiance to a political party can prevent people from wanting to think about the damage that the Covid mandates and Covid vaccines have caused. Since when have unvaccinated people been connected to Donald Trump? I really don’t understand why Covid vaccination has been made a partisan issue.

The Brownstone Institute published this essay which illustrates how we live in information bubbles:

...while having lunch at a Chinese restaurant yesterday, I overheard a conversation at a nearby table between six mature and self-evidently well-educated people in which each and every one complained with great exasperation about how they had done “everything right” when it came to masks, social distancing and vaccinations and still gotten Covid.

But no sooner had this round-robin of complaint ended that then they began talking about the urgent need to get further boosted against the deadly plague.

Question the policies? Or the efficacy of the vaccines? Call into question the quality of the information they had been provided about the virus and the vaccines? Nope. Just double and triple down on more of the same. And get suckered again.”

https://brownstone.org/articles/how-many-among-us-are-suckers/

From studying Covid-related news in both mainstream and independent media since March of 2020, I have seen invisible walls go up between people. People have lost more friends and family members because of their different views on Covid vaccination or Covid mandates than to Covid deaths.

A specific narrative has been fed to us about the response we should take to the Covid virus (vaccination, mask, school closures social isolatation, etc). According to clinical psychologist and professor Mattias Desmet (Ghent University in Belgium), 30% of the population have gone along with the Covid narrative unquestioning, 30% have rejected it and roughly 40% of the population are in the middle. They could go either way in their beliefs and generally don’t feel comfortable thinking about the vaccines, masking and the other Covid mandates.

Mattias Desmet is one of the MOST important thinkers I’ve come across since the Covid era begun.

Professor Desmet explains the concept of mass formation which is when people form an allegiance to a particular narrative and won’t change their minds even when presented with evidence to the contrary. I hope you will take the time to learn about mass formation, as it gives us a clear picture of the times we are in.

Spoiler: It’s a dangerous time we are living in.

I think the US took the wrong approach to Covid. I wish the US had reacted to the Covid virus like Sweden had in 2020. I wish we hadn’t shut down schools and businesses. I wish we hadn’t forced children to wear masks or forced college students to vaccinate.

Masking in schools has proven not to impact the rate of Covid infection in this and numerous other studies, which aren’t allowed in the mainstream press.

Our study took advantage of a unique natural experiment of two adjacent K-12 school districts in Fargo, North Dakota, one which had a mask mandate and one which did not in the fall of the 2021-2022 academic year. In the winter, both districts adopted a masks-optional policy allowing for a partial crossover study design. We observed no significant difference between student case rates while the districts had differing masking policies…”

28

https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-1773983/v1

I was on Sweden’s side early on by May of 2020. However, Sweden did make mistakes in that they put their Covid patients in nursing homes, and this wrong move ended up accounting for nearly half of their Covid-related deaths in 2020.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-52704836

However, despite making that tragic mistake, Sweden still did better than the US in deaths per million and the number of excess deaths. Compare the trends in Sweden to the trends in the US:

29

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#explore-the-global-situation

A recent study about Sweden’s response to Covid explains:

Sweden did not lock down and also did not experience an increase in non-COVID mortality rates. Figures released by the World Health Organization last month show that Sweden had fewer COVID deaths per capita than much of Europe despite refusing to enforce strict lockdowns and mask mandates like numerous other nearby countries.”

https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/new-study-concludes-lockdowns-caused-least-170000-excess-deaths-us

Speaking of Sweden, which keeps up-to-date birth records, their birthrate has been dropping dramatically, which you can see by clicking the link below. This can be seen in several other countries as well.

All along, in my opinion, the US should have been following a strategy called Focused Protection. You can learn about it here:

Conclusion

I know that the concept of death can be hard to look at, so thank you for reading this.

Finally, my opinions: I don’t think we should have shut down schools. We shouldn’t have shut down small businesses. We shouldn’t have mandated masks. We shouldn’t be coerced or mandated to take Covid vaccines.

I think people who do want to get a Covid vaccine should carefully study the pros and cons of vaccination. If people wish to vaccinate, that’s fine. If people don’t wish to vaccinate that should be fine too.

Vaccination doesn’t prevent infection or contagion, and many fully vaccinated and boosted people have died a Covid-related death.

I think we should be being taught how to boost our immune system which means eating well, being a healthy weight and making sure that our vitamin D3 levels are optimal.

People need to work their immune system similar to how they work their brain or muscles. I had thought we used to know that.

I don’t know how many lives have been saved due to vaccination. I know there are numbers based on models. However, in real life I do know that a shocking number of young people died from non-Covid causes in 2020-March 2022.

I don’t think the Covid vaccine should ever be given to children. If you do research, I think you might agree. Here is a recent article by Dr. Paul Alexander (COVID-19 Consultant Researcher in EBM -evidence based medicine, Research Methodology, and Clinical Epidemiology):

47

https://substack.com/profile/58916651-dr-paul-alexander

There are treatment protocols that aren’t allowed in the US that have been used with success in other countries. It’s disgusting that we are fed one line of thinking. Doctors today have their hands tied and they shouldn’t. We can’t allow our country to be so top-down that we lose honesty and common sense. I’m also weary of fact checkers.

I do agree that older people should avoid closed crowded spaces when there is a lot of Covid virus circulating in a community. That includes staying home in a house with closed windows. Ventilation is very important. I got Covid likely when I was in a crowded buffet line, where everyone was masked and likely nearly everyone was vaccinated. I would have missed 1 day of work due to Covid if we weren’t living in the Covid era. Covid is not a death sentence to most people.

I have two adult children and was a college professor for 29 years. I am particularly concerned about young adults. Many college students hadn’t wanted to take the Covid vaccine. Many of them have foregone going to higher ed because of the vaccine mandate. I also know many young people on social media who have been injured by a Covid vaccine. Personally, in my circle of friends and acquaintances, I know of 1 death and 1 emergency hospitalization in the 25-44 year age group. Both vaccinated and boosted.

48

Again, thank you for reading this.
